About us

A Family business...

Anton's Seafoods Ltd was established in 1973 by Tony (Ante) Barbarich.

Tony's involvement in the fishing industry dates back to 1951 when in partnership with his brother Lou (Luka) they established Symonds Street Fisheries. This business grew into one of Auckland's largest seafood retailer and wholesaler.

Symonds Street Fisheries was later merged with Nelson Fisheries Ltd
in the 1960's

Tony established Anton's Seafoods Ltd in 1973 and commenced trading as
an export broker marketing NZ seafood to Asia and the Pacific.

Since 1973 the company has expanded its operations to include wholesaling (1974), processing for export (1978), operating its own fishing vessels (1981) and ownership of fish quota (1986).

Over time the company has expanded its harvesting capacity and quotas.
In 1990 a purpose built 35,000 Sq ft. export licensed processing plant and cold store was constructed at Westfield, formerly the heart of Auckland's meat processing industry.

The Companies business is now grouped in four divisions:

  1. Fish Quota (Ownership)
  2. Fleet (Harvesting Operations)
  3. Processing (Export and Domestic markets)
  4. Management and Marketing

1. Fish Quota:
The groups various subsidiary and associate companies hold approximately 4500 metric tonnes of deepwater quotas. In addition to this, the group manages large volumes of other quotas.

2. Fleet:
Anton's currently owns and operates two large fresh fish trawlers and also contracts private fisherman to harvest some of its quotas. From time to time it also charters foreign trawlers and squid jiggers to harvest some of the Quota it manages

3. Processing:
The Anton's plant is currently processing up to 4000 Metric Tonnes (MT)
of fresh fish annually. The company also contract processes seafood for
other NZ fishing companies. The plant has the capacity to process up
to 8000 MT annually.

We primarily harvest and process middle depth and deep water species that are managed under New Zealand's Quota Management System (QMS).

The QMS is recognized internationally as one of the best fishery management systems currently in operation. The Ministry of Fisheries together with the key stakeholders in the Seafood Industry works jointly on management and research of our fisheries. The core concept underpinning
the QMS is based on the "Fisheries Act" principle of "Sustainable Utilisation" of fisheries resources.
