A Family business...
Anton's Seafoods Ltd was established in 1973, by Tony (Ante) Barbarich
Tony's involvement in the fishing industry dates back to 1951 when in partnership with his brother Lou (Luka), they established "Symonds Street Fisheries".
The business grew into one of Aucklands largest Seafood Retailers and Wholesalers.
This business was later merged into another seafood business (Nelson Fisheries) in the early 60's.
Tony continued working in the fishing industry, establishing Anton's Seafoods Ltd as an export broker marketing NZ seafood to Asia and the Pacific.
Since 1973 the company has expanded its operation adding Wholesale, Importing, Processing for Export, catching fish with its own vessels and ownership of fish "Quota" in 1986.
Over time the company expanded its fleet and quotas. In 1990 a purpose built 35,000 Sq ft. Export Licenced Process Facility was constructed at Westfield, formerly the heart of Auckland's Meat Processing Industry .
The Companies business is now grouped in four divisions.
- Fish Quota (Ownership)
- Fleet (Harvesting Operations)
- Processing (Export & Domestic markets)
- Management & Marketing
Fish Quota:
The groups various subsidiary & associate companies hold approximately 2500 metric tonnes of Deepwater quotas. In addition to this, the group manages large volumes of other quotas.
Fleet:
The company currently owns three trawlers and also contracts and charters Trawlers & Squid Jiggers to harvest some of the Quota it manages.
Processing Operations:
From 1990 untill 2005 the company owned and operated the processing facility processing up to 4000 MT of fresh fish annually.The plant was designed to handle up to 8000mt annually.
In December 2005, Anton's entered into a Processing Joint Venture with Aotearoa Fisheries Limited. The Jointly owned Processing Facility and Operating Company (Seafood Processors Ltd) now processes the catch of both companies.
The economies of scale from better use of facilities will deliver lower processing costs and more efficient production whilst ensuring the quality, synonymous with the Anton's brand, remains at its high standard.
Our Focus is on harvesting and processing Middle Depth and Deep water species that are managed under New Zealands Quota Management System.
A proven method of managing fisheries, by limiting extraction from the fishery.
The New Zealand Government is working in conjunction with the key investors in "The Fishing Industry", working Jointly on research and managment of the various fisheries, based on the "Fisheries Act"

"Sustainable Utilisation".
